In general, you’ll need to know how to work on every part of a car and consider all the different models out there. However, it is possible for you to specialize in a certain area if you want to. That depends on you.
You’ll need a high school diploma or equivalent (GED). Then you can look at various vocational schools that teach automotive master mechanic. If you are still in high school, see if you school offers the Automotive Youth Education Service because this can help prepare you to become an entry-level tech. Nevertheless, you will still need further education in a vocational school or community college.
Most vocational schools offer training for six to twelve months and some of them offer a certificate. Most community colleges offer a two year program that will provide you

with an associate’s degree. There is also a possibility that in your area you have dealerships that sponsor two-year associate degree programs as well. Dealerships offer coursework and have you work full time as a mechanic. You just can’t beat that. To find out more about that, look at College Board which a non-profit organization that connects students with educational sites. The Boards provides information about courses offered in an automotive associate program. These courses include but are not limited to trains and axles, suspension and steering, engine repair, brake systems, transmissions and electronics.
As soon as you finish or even before, you can apply for a mechanic’s position. Entry level positions start you as a trainee and possibly luber. Within a few months you’ll be on your way to doing simple repairs and regular service maintenance. It can take anywhere from two to five years to become a fully qualified automotive master mechanic.
