How to Become a Baker

How to Become a BakerDo you have an interest in the culinary arts? Do you find yourself in the kitchen a lot baking up batches of cookies or baking bread? If this is the love of your life, then you should consider becoming a baker. Being a baker can be very rewarding and you can make it happen.

You need to have a high school diploma or an equivalent (GED) to get started. You should be comfortable with math as bakers have to work with a wide range of measurements including fractions and equivalents.

This should really be something you enjoy because becoming a baker takes a considerable amount of practice and work so keep this in mind. You might want to get a job working as a baker in a small shop to get a feel for what you will be doing to see if you are a good fit.

Now it’s time to think about culinary school. See if you have local culinary schools. Check with your community college and private colleges. Many of them offer programs in the culinary arts. There are online culinary programs as well so you might want to check that out.

It’s amazing what coursework they have online these days. A number of online courses offer 100s of courses and you can take as many as you want and go at your own pace. They offer a wide range of interests and goals. Online courses offer videos, illustration, photography and quizzes that provide hands-on learning. You can also talk with test cooks for feedback and guidance. They offer materials for everyone including novice to advanced programs. The courses are in-depth and professionally based. Many online programs offer certificates, diplomas, associates and bachelor’s degrees in the culinary arts. A number of online programs offer a free trial period so that you can see if it works for you. Beyond that, some offer a monthly membership which is really inexpensive.

Before and during your culinary school program, try to become an apprentice to a baker. Working for a baker will give you a lot of practice and give you ideas of what it takes to be a successful baker. It may also help you determine if you want to specialize in a particular type of baking. You might want to bake bread but on the other hand you might want to specialize in pastries, cake or pies. The more experience you gain the better off you are and it will look good on your resume when you try to land the real first
