How to Become a Bartender

how to become a bartenderDo you enjoy working around people in a public situation? Are you friendly and personable? Perhaps you should consider becoming a bartender. Very little schooling is required and this is a great way to earn extra money to supplement your income or perhaps go full time, which ever you prefer. Bar tending jobs are available pretty much 24/7 in many places. And, bartenders are always needed and they can make a fair amount of money.

Becoming a bartender does not require having a high school diploma in most cases. It depends on your employer and what they want.

Now that you have decided you want to become a bartender, it’s time to enroll in bartending school. Many schools have classes that run two hours a day and go 5 times a week for a month. At the end of this period, you will have to prove proficiency by making a number of drinks for your instructor. Often times you will be given a list of drinks to be made in a certain period of time. This is to test whether or not you can handle a heavy work load. In the real world, there will be times when you won’t have any drinks to make and other times you will be over whelmed. You have to be able to hand the pressure.

You’ll be pleased to know that bar tending courses are available online and this is great if you don’t have time to commute to a class. Online coursework depends on your ability to memorize how drinks are made, however, you can go at your own pace. Local bar tending schools and online schools do offer certificates and it is best if you get a certificate.

One of the things you might consider is to get on-the-job training. Check in your area to see if any of the bars are training. This doesn’t happen very often these days but check it out anyway. Keep an eye out in local newspapers. Often times if a bar trains you, they will hire you thereafter. Visit some bars and let them know you’re looking for on-the-job training. They may be looking for someone to work for less money.

Making good drinks is a matter of practice. A good bartender needs to know how to make the most popular drinks but also keep up with new drinks that are coming out.

As a bartender, you will be on your feet for hours so keep that in mind. You’ll need to be in control at all times because some of your customers may get a bit rowdy and you’ll need to take care of that. It’s your responsibility to keep your patrons safe.
